My name is Masubah Nadeem and I am currently a freshman at City College. This past semester was my first semester and it taught me a lot. There were some challenges along the way but overall it was great. One course that really helped me and stood out to me was my FIQWS writing class. This class taught me multiple things that I wasn’t taught before. I learned how to write a conference paper that could’ve possibly been presented to a specific audience in real life. I learned that you have to start off with a conference proposal which gives a brief description of what you will actually speak about in the conference paper. You must have your own research done for this as well. For this paper you need to know who your audience is. It will give a basic foundation for what you are trying to write about. It will also make your paper sound much clearer when and if you present. Since you are technically planning to present this paper, you must focus on one specific idea you are trying to argue for or against. You do not have to just argue for something in a conference paper. You can go against a certain point. With that one point, it keeps the audience focused on what you want to inform them on. One thing that made this class different was the contract grading system. Our teacher, Mr.Druffel allowed us to choose whichever letter grade we would like for this semester as long as we did the work required for that grade. It gave us a little more freedom with our decision making as college students. As we are getting older, we are expected to make our own decisions and be responsible for what we do. With contract grading, it allowed us to choose which grade we preferred and be responsible with the amount of work we had to do for it and be responsible for managing our time for it. Something I liked that our teacher would constantly do was put us into different groups every time we did group work which was almost every class. This made our time in class go by quick, we felt more engaged with what we were doing, and it allowed us to interact with people we didn’t speak to before. If we were just sitting in class the whole time listening to a teacher talk it would be boring and you wouldn’t learn as much. I personally think with group work and activities like that really allow a student to feel engaged. Overall, I am thankful for all the writing tips Mr.Druffel gave us along with information regarding research. This will help me with my writing throughout college and allow me to write stronger papers.
This spring semester of 2020, I worked on newer papers and projects. Ms.Conroy assigned each of us in groups which we stayed with throughout the semester researching our topics. My group and I researched about nutritional labels and how to read them effectively. One of the projects we did was create a website for our Public Awareness Campaign. This website has all the information people will need to be educated about this topic. It is linked here along with other assignments I completed this semester.
